Cal Football Fall Camp Preview: The Defensive Line

New Defensive Coordinator Andy Buh is making the switch from Cal's previous 3-4 base scheme to a 4-3. During spring ball, it appeared that our new base is a 4-3 under alignment which moves the SLB up on the line of scrimmage outside of the tight end. However, this isn't as big a transition as it might appear on the surface.

Former DC Clancy Pendergast rarely used a conventionally aligned 3-4. Instead, he often brought both OLBs up on the line of scrimmage or subbed out linemen for additional linebackers. With many of those OLBs now switched to defensive ends, some of the changes are really more semantic than anything else. What remains to be seen is how aggressively Coach Buh will direct his linemen. We've seen an emphasis on gap control under Bob Gregory and we've seen an emphasis on attacking up-field under Clancy Pendergast. Judging from previous stops, expect more of the former than the latter from Coach Buh. He's shown that he prefers to emphasize discipline and fundamentals over selling out to make a big play.

Foremost under the list of concerns has to be staying healthy. Last year, almost every lineman in the two deeps was forced to miss time with injuries ranging from nagging to season-ending. Depth remains a concern with the off-season departures of Whiteside, McCain, and Kaufusi. Whiteside and McCain were our two most explosive pass-rushers and Kaufusi was expected to play a significant role in the DT rotation. The fact that three incoming linemen, Hughes, Manley, and McKinley didn't qualify in time for summer bridge certainly doesn't help matters.

All defensive coordinators lean on the cliched "we want to stop the run and get pressure on the passer" as their mission statement. Let's just hope that Buh and company have the horses and the know-how to make it happen.

Defensive Line:

DE: Brennan Scarlett(Jr)/Todd Barr(So)/Sione Sina(Jr)
NT: Deandre Coleman(Sr)/Viliami Moala(Jr)
DT: Mustafa Jalil(Jr)/Austin Clark(Sr)
Rush End: Kyle Kragen(Jr)/Dan Camporeale(Sr)

Also:

DE: Harrison Wilfey(Sr), Antoine Davis(So), Puka Lopa(So), Garrett Hughes(Fr), Ray Davison(Fr), Takkarist McKinley(Fr)
DT: Gabe King(Jr), Marcus Manley(So), Jacobi Hunter(Fr), Tony Mekari(Fr)

Brennan Scarlett was a defensive end in high school, switched to OLB at Cal, and is now back at end. He's got a rare combination of size and speed that allows him to hold the point of attack while also providing a pass rushing threat. Injuries have slowed him the past two seasons.

Todd Barr has one of the best bursts off the snap that you'll ever see. During his first playing time as a redshirt frosh last year, he showed that he was already one of our best pass-rushers. Expect to see him featured prominently on obvious passing downs.

Sione Sina is a highly touted 4* JC transfer known for his motor. However, he's still recovering from ACL surgery and it's unknown whether he'll play this year or redshirt.

Fans have been expecting big things from Deandre Coleman ever since he created stadium-wide oohs by using a blocker as a makeshift battering ram to knock over both lineman and quarterback. There were flashes last year, but we never got to see Coleman become a consistently dominant force. Moving inside from SDE to NT seems to be a good fit for his skill set. Look for him to clog the middle provided he can stay healthy.

Viliami Moala was supposed to be exactly what Cal needed in a nose tackle to anchor its 3-4 defense. Whether it has been injuries, conditioning, or a lack of technique, his on-field production has yet to match the expectations that accompanied the 5* high school accolades. Let's hope this is the year we see "Tiny" keep his pad level low and have a break-through season.

Mustafa Jalil was impressive enough to earn playing time as a true freshman. Unfortunately, his sophomore campaign was hampered by a knee injury which ultimately required season-ending surgery. Due to lack of big bodies on the line, he's moving inside from end to tackle this year.

Austin Clark has done yeoman's work whenever called upon to hold the rope. With Kaufusi off the team, he's the next man up as our backup DT.

With both Whiteside and McCain out, rush end becomes a huge question mark. JC transfer Kyle Kragen showed a knack for getting to the passer during spring ball. However, JC transfers usually take a season of adjustment before they acclimate to Div-I ball. We'll need Kragen to be up to speed sooner rather than later.

Dan Camporeale is an odd choice to move from OLB to rush end. He's a smart player who knows his assignments and gets himself positioned properly. This discipline makes him an asset in coverage. However, he hasn't shown the explosiveness or moves that typically make for a play-making pass rusher.

Antoine Davis was a late add to the 2012 class from Contra Costa College. He was a full qualifier out of high school, but opted to go the JC route in order to get stronger and better prepare himself for Div-I ball. He's tall, long-armed and athletic. The former coaching staff were grooming him as a pass-rushing predator DE/LB.

Puka Lopa may not have the flashiest measureables, but he's tough, instinctive, and one of those guys that just knows how to play. He was highly productive in high school and earned Scout Team POY honors during his redshirt year.

Harrison Wilfey is a JC transfer who has been moved over from tight end to provide more depth.

Gabe King absolutely looks the part of a star defensive lineman. But despite impressive high school accolades which included US Army AA honors and being rated as high as the #5 DE in the country, he's another player who has yet to live up to expectations. After starting at end, he was moved inside to tackle last year. Even with our depleted roster, it remains to be seen if he'll crack the two-deep and become a contributor.

Ordinarily, it's highly rare for true frosh Dlinemen to play and contribute during their first year. But depth issues might press some young players into action sooner rather than later. Of these, juco transfer Marcus Manley was perhaps the most likely to earn playing time because of our lack of experienced depth at tackle. Unfortunately, he, Garrett Hughes and Takkarist McKinley didn't qualify for summer bridge while issues with their eligibility are being worked out.

The starters look solid, but proven depth remains a concern. We're an inopportune injury away from this unit becoming a serious issue. Although we dream every year of a dominant line that can stuff the run while also providing pressure out of our base look, expectations should be more modest until proven otherwise. The potential is there. However, we need to luck into good health while having a number of key players take that next step. Is new Dline coach Barry Sacks the hero that we need?

Defensive LIne Summary

Position Coaches: Barry Sacks(defensive tackles), Garret Chacere(defensive ends)

Probable Strengths:

Experience. This is the one position group that has a senior starter and a number of juniors in the two-deeps.

Speed. With converted LBs as ends and some ends shifting to tackle, our line will be lighter, but fast.

Talent. By recruiting stars alone, this is a group with several 4*s and even a 5*.

Potential Weaknesses:

Health. Until proven otherwise, durability of our starters will be a season-long concern.

Size. Moala is the only true NT. Besides Coleman, we're a little light at tackle. Our rush ends are really under-sized.

Depth. Losing three players from the two-deep hurts. We'll need young players to step up.

Biggest Questions:

Will this unit finally perform up to expectations?

Can our starters stay healthy?

Will we be able to generate a consistent pass rush?

How will Buh decide to use the line? Full attack or gap control?

Google reveals the expected (new Nexus 7) and the unexpected (Chromecast)

The good ship Google was leaking like a sieve in the run-up to yesterday's 'Breakfast with Sundar' event, and for the most part the leaks were spot on...at least in terms of tablets.

As anticipated, Google unveiled a new Nexus 7. This year's model is thinner, lighter and faster than last year's, but also slightly more expensive (the 16 GB model is $230). It also has an impressive screen resolution of 1920 x 1200 (323 PPI, which Google claims is the highest PPI of any tablet on the market). Powering the tablet is a 1.5 Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro with Adreno 320 graphics.

The new Nexus 7 arrives at retailers and on Google Play on July 30th (pre-orders are open at some retailers already and by the time you read this, probably on Play as well). If 16 GB cramps your style, a 32 GB model is $270 and a 32 GB LTE model is $349.

In addition to new hardware, the 2013 Nexus 7 ships with Android 4.3, though this point upgrade is fairly minor. It adds 'restricted profiles' (think parental controls), support for OpenGL ES 3.0 which Google's Hugo Barra says is big news for game developers, and Bluetooth Smart technology (think lower power consumption). Additionally Netflix announced 1080P support for the new Nexus 7 and Android 4.3, and promised this support will come to other phones and tablets later this year.

Android 4.3 should also be rolling out via OTA update on the original Nexus 7 as well as the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus, so keep an eye out for that.

Google's other big announcement was Chromecast, a $35 HDMI dongle that supports media streaming. The idea is that you plug the Chromecast into an HDMI port, power it via a USB port or A/C adapter, and then use your smartphone, tablet (Android or iOS, no Windows Phone 8 support yet) or a computer running Chrome, to control it.

Out of the gate it supports Netflix, Google Play, YouTube, Pandora and Vimeo but expect more services to follow. The $35 price includes 3 free months of Netflix and I was suprised to learn you can apply it to a pre-existing Netflix account (usually deals like this are limited to new customers).

People seem excited by Chromecast but I've got one concern; is Chromecast a sign that Google is throwing in the towel on Google TV?

I'm also curious that Chromecast apparently can't draw power from MHL compliant HDMI ports, but instead requires a 'patch' cable between one of your TV's USB ports and a USB port on the Chromecast dongle, or just the use of an A/C adapter.

The Chromecast will control your TV if it's a relatively recent model with HDMI CEC support. So in theory, by tapping an icon on your tablet you can turn on your TV, switch to the correct input and start streaming Netflix.

Of course since I'm a Netflix member, that 3 months of service is worth $24 or so, meaning the Chromecast only costs me $11 (that's gadget freak economics). I need another device to stream stuff to my TV like I need another hole in my head, but Chromecast is so cheap I just couldn't resist it. Unfortunately by the time I decided to pre-order my ship date had slipped to August 11th (an hour earlier it had been August 2nd), but whenever it arrives I'll do a hands-on.

Oh, and if you're a developer you might be interested in the SDK.

So Android fans, are you on-board for either of these products?

Pope Francis speaks against drug liberalization

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Pope Francis has jumped into a political debate over the liberalization of drug laws in Latin America, saying legalization will not reduce the problems of addiction.

In a speech in Rio de Janeiro to inaugurate a drug-treatment wing at the Saint Francis hospital, the pontiff called drug trafficking a "scourge," saying that it "favors violence and sows the seeds of suffering and death."

He said reducing drug addiction will not come from legalizing some drugs, as is currently being proposed by some leaders in the region.

Francis is in Brazil for a seven-day visit that is his first foreign trip as pope.

Mexican government to propose constitutional energy reform in August

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto will present a constitutional energy reform to Congress in August, setting the stage for major new private investment in the oil sector, a top lawmaker said on Wednesday.

Pena Nieto has said he favors an overhaul of country's closed energy industry in an effort to lure private capital and boost flagging oil and gas production.

David Penchyna, leader of the Senate's energy committee and a member of Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), said the proposal will seek to change the constitution to allow either concessions or risk-sharing contracts.

"We will have President Pena's initiative in August," said Penchyna. "We do believe that the initiative will have to contain constitutional changes," he added.

Keep your dog cool with water | Pets | The Sun Herald

JOHN FITZHUGH/SUN HERALDPaul Roberts of Biloxi pours water for his dog, Sahara, at the off-leash dog park on Popp's Ferry Road in Biloxi on Thursday, July 18, 2013.

JOHN FITZHUGH ? SUN HERALD Buy Photo

Cars can be a dog's worst enemy, and water their best friend during the summertime heat.

"We get a lot of calls of animals left in the cars," said Capt. Harold Windom who oversees Biloxi Police Department's animal control officers. "That's probably the most dangerous.

"Folks don't realize that it gets so hot" in cars, he said, speaking of pet owners who drive around with their pets and leave them in the car to run errands.

"It takes a very few minutes" for the car to get dangerously hot.

"The second thing is not enough water," Windom said.

Veterinarian Dr. Allen Roberts of Moss Point agreed.

"If they're outside, they need shade and they need water," Roberts said.

"If you're going to leave them outside, put much more water than you think they would ever drink," Windom said.

"A five-gallon bucket is not too much water,"

he said. "It's much better to have way too much than not enough."

At the off-leash dog park on Popp's Ferry Road in Biloxi, most dog owners wait until late afternoon to come out and let their pets run.

"That's why we only come out at night," said Robert Scruggs of his two Siberian huskies.

"They do not do well in the heat," he said. "They're indoors all the time."

All the dog owners at the park bring water for their pets, though the dogs always seem to prefer any bowl but their own to drink from.

Paul Roberts brings a gallon jug of water for Sahara, a border collie-Labrador mix.

Sahara had her long hair trimmed "to keep her a little bit cooler," Roberts said.

Trimming "seems to be beneficial" for some breeds of dogs, Allen Roberts said, but light-skinned breeds are more likely to be sunburned.

"You've got to worry about sunburn, and they will burn just as easily as us," Windom said.

A dog suffering from too much heat can be identified by excessive panting and drooling, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate and vomiting, said Allen Roberts, who has practiced for 37 years.

He recommends using a wet rag to cool the dog, and even putting them into a bath of room-temperature water, then slowly cooling the water.

"Give it some time and get that temperature down," he said.

Breeds with flat noses like boxers and pugs are more likely to suffer from the heat, as well as overweight, older and unhealthy dogs, he said.

"If you see a dog that's in distress, call, we'll come check it out," Windom said.

"We'd much rather check out a dog and find out they're okay than come pick one up and have to dispose them because they've already passed away."

Here's Everything Wrong with X-Men

It's been forever and ago since X-Men first came out (13 years!) but since The Wolverine is coming out this weekend, CinemaSins decided to re-visit the comic book classic (is 13 years enough time to call it a classic?) and point out everything wrong with it. I would have just pointed out everything wrong with the first X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie but I think the entire world is pretending that movie never happened so we can see Hugh Jackman shirtless again. Redskins' RG3: 'Doctors cleared me to practice'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Robert Griffin III has passed a major test toward his goal of playing in Week 1, getting the go-ahead from the team doctors days before the Washington Redskins open training camp.

"Doctors cleared me to practice. Coach is going to ease me in," Griffin announced Monday on Twitter.

The two sentences represent hurdles past and future. Even though Griffin says he has the medical OK, it is now up to coach Mike Shanahan to determine how often and how vigorously Griffin practices when the Redskins open camp Thursday in Richmond, Va.

The Redskins had no comment on Griffin's tweet. However, a person familiar with the situation said the Redskins have cleared Griffin to practice. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the club has not made an announcement.

Still, it seems more likely than ever that Griffin will be under center when the Redskins open the regular season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 9, just eight months after he had reconstructive surgery on his right knee.

"It's great news," right guard Chris Chester said. "I'm really excited about it. It's a great chance to continue from where we left off last year."

Griffin's injury and subsequent rehabilitation overwhelmed the Redskins offseason. He led the club to its first division title in 13 years in 2012 and was chosen the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year, and his unique talents are needed if the team is to sustain that momentum.

Griffin injured the knee multiple times last season. He missed one game after spraining the lateral collateral ligament, then reinjured the knee at least twice more in the playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks in January. He had surgery a few days later to repair the ACL and LCL.

Questions as to whether Griffin should have been removed from the game sooner have led Shanahan to consider a more cautious approach. Shanahan said in April that, for the coming season, "one thing we're going to make sure of is that Robert never plays if he's not 100 percent."

Nevertheless, Griffin has proven to be a remarkable and dedicated athlete, and his progress is also indicative of an evolving calendar of expectations when it comes to ACL injuries, which traditionally have required a year or more of rehab. Griffin's timeframe is similar to that of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who led the league in rushing last season after tearing an ACL the previous December.

The Redskins have said all along that Griffin was ahead of schedule. He demonstrated what he called "explosive sprinting" at last month's minicamp and said he already had a rehab plan for his honeymoon. He married his longtime fiancee earlier this month.

"I think we knew he was going to play a good portion of the season anyway, from the way I've heard things were going," Chester said. "But if we can have him the whole season, it would be better."

How would you change Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1?

DNP Samsung Galaxy Note 101 review

Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 promised plenty, but when we reviewed it, it didn't quite hit all of its marks. Maybe it was the high price when judged against its plastic chassis, or perhaps that our reviewer really wanted a better display than the 1,280 x 800 LCD that was provided. On the upside, the unit's multitasking prowess can't be dissed, but we did gripe that it was still using Ice Cream Sandwich rather than Jelly Bean. Still, we're sure plenty of people purchased this thing, so why not tell us what you liked and more importantly, what you would have changed?

NetApp regroups to take on Africa

?We?re not pulling out of Africa? quite the opposite.? Those were the words of NetApp Director MEEA (for the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa), Konstantin Ebert, who, together with other senior executives of from the global flash memory and storage service provider, explained the launch of an enhanced African growth strategy yesterday in Johannesburg.

Newly appointed regional director for Africa at NetApp, Mark Ridley. (Image source: NetApp)

NetApp announced the enhancement of its existing business model to engage the Africa market. The company has also appointed a new Regional Director and launched a renewed partnership-focused channel model.

Ebert and Thomas Ehrlich, VP Partners & Pathways EMEA at NetApp, said in a presentation of the new setup that the main change was shifting partners into the epicentre of its go-to-market strategy.

The company has established offices in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, and has two distributors ? Westcon and Fujitsu ? in South?Africa.

Both Ebert and Ehrlich emphasised that NetApp continues to operate in accordance with an indirect, channel-focused model. Only now, they have positioned the partner at the forefront of the go-to-market strategy.

According to this strategy the company?s partner account managers will play a more proactive role in meeting partner needs and assisting with opportunities.

A large portion of the responsibility to successfully roll this strategy out to the Africa market is that of newly appointed Regional Director and former country manager for Dell Computers, Mark Ridley.

His role covers development and execution of sales and marketing strategies, enhancing the channel ecosystem and expanding the NetApp customer base in this region.

?With many markets emerging and maturing at a fast pace, the African continent offers a very interesting playing field. I am confident that NetApp?s solutions hold tremendous value for partners and end customers such as telecommunications, utility or commodity companies and service providers,? says Ridley. ?Our approach inAfricais 100 percent indirect and we will rely heavily on partners to execute. This includes distribution and integration, but also high value opportunities such as consulting and professional services. I am looking forward to working with them to grow NetApp?s presence on the continent.?

Not all online tracking is bad | Idaho Business Review

Don BushLately we?ve seen a lot of news stories about the National Security Agency?s program for tracking phone records, Internet searches and Facebook pages. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have decried and supported the practice, constitutionalists are debating over the legalities, and American citizens are either praising Edward Snowden?s courage or want him tried for treason.

No matter which side of the issue you come down on, one thing to remember is not all online tracking is bad ? especially when it comes to protecting you and your business.

I?m talking specifically about tracking information on the Internet as it relates to cybercrime, fraud and securing the online ecosystem for consumers.

A couple of years ago legislation started to appear in various states known as ?do not track? laws. These policies wanted to leave it up to consumers to determine whether or not they wanted to be tracked. Then the federal government stepped in and saw this as a consumer privacy issue. It was quite a soapbox issue for politicians to beat their chests and talk about the evils of big business invading the privacy and personal information of consumers.

I have no doubt that some companies use personally identifiable information in ways that would make consumers cringe. However, the problem is a double-edged sword. If consumers determine what information, if any, can be reviewed during their online transaction, then criminals can, too.

When making a purchase, or conducting almost any type of business online, hundreds of pieces of data are available for review by retailers and financial institutions alike. These can include the location of the device you are using, billing and shipping information, time and date stamp, account numbers, email address, browser type, and dozens of other settings that identify you specifically. This digital fingerprint gives the retailer or financial institution enough information about you to confidently and securely complete a transaction.

When a criminals use ill-gotten financial information, like a stolen credit card, they will do everything they can to mask who they really are to appear as the actual owners. Let?s look at an example of how this works and what?s at stake.

A fraudster, using a credit card stolen from someone in the U.S., begins shopping at an electronics retailer. He fills up the shopping cart with lots of cool gadgets, puts in the credit card number, security code and billing address. However, instead of having the purchase shipped to the card owner?s home, he puts in another shipping address for delivery. Not unusual to have things shipped to an address other than the billing address, so everything looks fine, right?

Using techniques such as the digital fingerprint, it takes just milliseconds for the retailer to see that the fraudster is not in the U.S., but is sitting in Vietnam hiding behind cyber walls such as rented IP addresses. The browser on his machine is set to Vietnamese as the language, shows a time and date stamp that do not match the locations given in the order page online, and he has made 17 purchases in the last 30 minutes, using the same card. All of a sudden the purchase doesn?t look so good.

Without the digital tracking abilities used by millions of retailers and financial institutions around the world, stopping this type of simple fraud would be nearly impossible.

Reputable retailers and financial institution will disclose in their privacy statements what information they will review and whether or not they will use personally identifiable information for anything other than security of payments and consumer protection.

If you?ve ever completed a transaction online, checked a bank account or purchased a new pair of shoes, you have benefited from tracking technology. Turn it off, and the criminals win.

In his role as vice president of marketing at Kount, Bush works with online retailers, industry analysts, consultants, law enforcement and trade associations to determine best practices, trends in the market place and the latest threats to e-commerce businesses. Don is been a regular speaker on fraud topics at several industry events in the U.S. and Europe.

The "Come Back Eliot, All Is Forgiven" Gabfest

Become a fan of the Political Gabfest on Facebook. We post to the Facebook page throughout the week, so keep the conversation going by joining us there. Or follow us @SlateGabfest!

To listen to the discussion, use the player below:

In a live recording of the Slate Political Gabfest at the Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Emily Bazelon, John Dickerson, and David Plotz discuss the turmoil in Egypt, and the challenges it poses for the Obama administration. They also discuss Eliot Spitzer?s decision to run for office and whether the former New York governor (and Slate contributor) deserves forgiveness. Plus, what adults might learn at summer camp. During the cocktail chatter portion of the show, the Gabfesters are joined by special guest Peter Sagal, host of NPR?s Wait Wait ? Don?t Tell Me.

Here are some of the links and references mentioned during this week's show:

Special guest Peter Sagal, host of NPR?s Wait Wait ? Don?t Tell Me, chatters about Osama Bin Laden?s cowboy hat, one of Bin Laden?s countersurveillance strategies described in a leaked Pakistani government report first published by Al-Jazeera. David was reminded of a Slate Explainer that wondered, ?Where do Palestinian militants buy ski masks??

John chatters about The Civil War in 50 Objects, by Harold Holzer.

There was a sing-along! Peter notes that Woody Guthrie?s original lyrics for ?This Land Is Your Land? differed from the version sung at the Gabfest. Wikipedia confirms this verse as part of the original 1940 lyrics:

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing ?
God blessed America for me.
[This land was made for you and me.]

The Gabfest audience sang a variation. Peter recommends Joe Klein?s Woody Guthrie: A Life, saying it describes how variations of the song reflect different political messages.

During the Q-and-A period, an audience member asked for summer reading recommendations. Here?s what David, Emily, John, and Peter are reading:

Orange, Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom offices raided in EU data probe

Woop, woop, that's the sound of the... European Commission? EU officials (figuratively) kicked in the doors of Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom and Orange's European headquarters this week. The trio are being investigated after ISP Cogent Communications alleged that they are deliberately blocking data-hungry services -- much like Cogent's earlier complaint about Comcast. The trio are pleading their innocence while the case continues, and hoping that investigators don't mess with the office furniture too much.

Pistons agree to 2-year deal with Chauncey Billups

DETROIT (AP) ? Chauncey Billups wanted to stay with the Detroit Pistons for the rest of his career.

Now, the team that traded him away wants him back.

Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars confirmed Thursday morning that Billups and the team have agreed to terms on a contract.

Billups is getting a two-year deal, the first season is guaranteed, for $2.5 million each year.

"I never wanted to leave here. Everyone knows that," he said on Jan. 26, 2011, after making a flurry of 3-pointers late in a game to help Denver win in Detroit. "I wanted to retire here."

He's back to help the Pistons as a pass-first point guard, who can make 3-point shots. And, he will be expected to mentor 21-year-old Brandon Knight and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the No. 8 overall pick in the draft, in the backcourt and off the court.

Detroit dealt to Denver on Nov. 3, 2008, when the franchise decided its championship-winning window had closed. The Pistons are almost 100 games under .500 since making the unpopular and unsuccessful move. The Pistons traded Billups in part to speed the development of Rodney Stuckey, to see if Allen Iverson could provide a spark while his contract expired and to clear salary-cap space for the future.

"It was just a season of inevitable change and inevitable pain," Dumars said after the 2008-09 season ended by getting swept in the first round by the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers. "Although it was a tough year, we also knew it was a necessary process if you're trying to position yourself to remain relevant."

Stuckey, who is still with the team, never became a dependable point guard. The millions spent in the summer of 2009 on free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva turned out to be wasted. The Pistons traded Gordon last summer, basically to get his contract off the books, to Charlotte for a first-round pick. Detroit could still deal Villanueva, who is entering the last year of his deal, to a team that might want to take on his expiring contract later this summer or during the upcoming season.

The Pistons, 148-244 since trading Billups, are in a four-year postseason drought that is their longest since missing six straight from 1978 through 1983.

Billups, a five-time All-Star, turns 37 in September.

He tore his left Achilles tendon during the 2011-12 season, when he was limited to 20 game with the Los Angeles Clippers, and bounced back last season to play 22 games for them.

Billups has averaged 15.4 points ? making 42 percent of his 3-pointers ? and 5.5 assists during his career.

Boston drafted him out of Colorado with the No. 3 pick in the 1997 draft. He went on to be on rosters in Toronto, with his hometown Nuggets, Orlando, Minnesota, Detroit, back to Denver, New York and the Clippers.

He bounced around early in his career and has lately, but has always had fans at The Palace, which hasn't been the same buzz-filled building it once was since he was sent away. When Billups played his first game there after the trade on March 3, 2009, his signature introduction ? "Buh! Buh! Buh! Billups! ? set off a standing ovation that lasted a couple of minutes and led to him blowing kisses in each direction.

Back then, Billups said it was the most emotional regular season game he's experienced in his 12-year career.

"I may forget the game and what happened," he said. "But the ovation and warm welcome the fans gave me, I'll never forget."

It's easy to forget how good the Pistons were after they signed him as a free agent in 2002.

With his steady play on the court and calm demeanor off it, Billups helped the Pistons win a title and come within a victory of repeating while reaching at least the Eastern Conference finals in each of his six full seasons with them. The Magic Johnson-led Los Angeles Lakers are the only other franchise to play in six straight conference finals since 1970-71, when teams had to win two series to advance that far.

The Pistons, though, seemed to be fading as a championship contender when it won just two games in three straight conference finals before sending Billups away. As the Pistons try to make a climb back toward being a relevant NBA team, a goal that was helped by signing Josh Smith on Wednesday, they want Billups to return.

Microsoft reboots with sweeping reorganization

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft Corp. has decided its entire business needs a new operating system.

CEO Steve Ballmer is restructuring the company to cope with a quickening pace of technological change that has left the world's largest software maker a step behind its two biggest rivals, Apple and Google.

In an effort to catch up, Microsoft is dismantling an organizational structure that separated the company into sometimes disjointed divisions and hatching a more cohesive product line-up. The new set up revolves around software, devices and services connecting those devices to applications stored in remote data centers ? a concept that has become known as "cloud computing."

The move comes amid a lukewarm response to the latest version of Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system and a steady decline in demand for personal computers as people increasingly rely on more convenient smartphones and tablets.

If things pan out the way Ballmer envisions, the shake-up announced Thursday will foster more rapid innovation and sharpen the company's focus on countering the threat posed by mobile devices running on software made by Apple and Google while laptop and desktop computers powered by Windows lose their luster. He is hoping a more closely-knit organization making the software and services that run smartphones, tablets, the Xbox video game console and, yes, PCs will re-establish Microsoft's reputation as "a company that helps people get stuff done."

"We are ready to take Microsoft in bold new directions," Ballmer told analysts and reporters during conference call.

Ballmer, 57, can't afford to lose his way now. If he does, Microsoft could be even further eclipsed by rivals. That, in turn, could disillusion investors already exasperated with the lackluster performance of Microsoft's stock since Ballmer succeeded his close friend, company co-founder Bill Gates, as CEO 13 years ago.

During Ballmer's reign, Microsoft's stock has slipped by nearly 40 percent even as the company's annual revenue has roughly quadrupled from $20 billion to nearly $80 billion. The bellwether Standard & Poor's 500 has climbed by 14 percent during the same time while Apple's stock price is nearly 17 times higher. By the time Google went public, Ballmer had already been Microsoft's CEO for four years. Since then, Google's stock has risen tenfold.

Microsoft's stock has surged 23 percent in the past three months, partly because the company's revenue is holding up better than many analysts expected, despite five consecutive quarters of declining PC sales. Some recent buyers of Microsoft's stock had been betting the company would do something even more dramatic, such as spinning off a division or shedding its unprofitable Internet search engine, Bing, said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. Neither of those appears likely, now that Ballmer has reshuffled the business.

Gillis views the changes as Ballmer's tacit acknowledgement that Microsoft had become bogged down in bureaucracy and second-guessing ?and an admission that there was too much internal strife as various factions formed to protect their turf.

"We have to make the right decisions more quickly," Ballmer said. The company's motto now: "One Microsoft all the time."

Ballmer appears to have the right idea, although it would have looked even smarter had he done it shortly after it became clear that Apple's 2010 release of the iPad was reshaping the tech market, said Gartner Inc. analyst David Cearley.

"They are really reorganizing for the market reality that has been in place for the last three years," Cearley said. It would have been nice if it was done earlier, but it's not too little too late yet. The real key is execution. All these changes make sense and I can see a path forward, but that path forward is a really rocky one."

Most of Microsoft's key executives will remain in positions of power at the Redmond, Wash. company although with new roles and more defined responsibilities. The company's new divisions include engineering, marketing and business development.

Terry Myerson, who had been overseeing Windows Phone, will lead Microsoft's operating systems and engineering group, namely Windows. Qi Lu, who had been overseeing Bing, will head applications and services.

Microsoft named veteran executive Julie Larson-Green head of its devices and studios engineering group, which will be in charge of hardware development, games, music and entertainment. She had been promoted in November to lead all Windows software and hardware engineering after Steven Sinofsky, the president of its Windows and Windows Live operations, left the company shortly after the launch of Windows 8.

Some of what Microsoft is doing mirrors changes that Apple and Google already have executed.

For instance, Apple put its iOS software for iPhones and iPads along with its operating system for its Mac computer under one executive, Craig Federighi, in a shake-up last year. And Google's Android software for mobile devices and Chrome software for laptops were aligned under the management of the same executive, Sundar Pichai, for the first time during the spring.

Now, Microsoft hopes to mimic the success of its rivals in a world that increasingly revolves around mobile devices and Internet services. Gartner estimates nearly 867 million devices running on Android software will be shipped worldwide this year, up from 505 million last year. Worldwide shipments of Windows-powered devices are expected to total nearly 340 million this year, down from 346 million last year, Gartner forecasts. But those Windows machines are primarily PCs, not smartphones or tablets. Apple will ship about 296 million iOS and Mac devices this year, up from 213 million last year, Gartner predicted.

Ballmer's reorganization "should help Microsoft slow its decline, but the question remains whether it will be enough to help it climb into new markets," Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett said.

Houston Zoo using Google Glass for behind-the-scenes video

Houston Zoo Google Glass

Google Glass is the computer made by the search giant that is worn like a pair of glasses. The unique gadget takes photos and shoots video from the perspective of the wearer. While some have privacy concerns about a gadget that can clandestinely record those around it, Google Glass can be used in unique ways that appeal to many.

The Houston Zoo has gotten a Google Glass and is using it to give interested parties a feel for what it's like to take care of the animals. Video is being shot to appear on the zoo's web site that shows workers behind-the-scenes as they interact with the animals.

See also:

The videos will offer a unique view from the perspective of zoo workers showing viewers what it is like to work with the animals in ways not normally seen by zoo visitors.?

Houston Zoo's interactive marketing director Ryan Draper?told the Houston Chronicle that workers are already shooting video of workers caring for the animals.

"It's going to be a brand new way to experience the zoo," Draper said. "Normally the public doesn't have the training required to handle the animals, but with Google Glass you don't need it. They can just ride along with the keepers, and get that up-close-and-personal animal experience."

This innovative use of Google Glass is only the beginning of uses for the new device from Google. Get ready to see all kinds of activities not normally seen by the masses.

Expect to see Google Glass find uses in the enterprise. One such use could see companies using Google Glass to record tasks by workers with unique jobs. The on-the-job videos could be shown to other employees to give an idea what their coworkers do for the business.

Three Things For Dog Owners To Remember When Training Their Pet

Dog

According to the ASCPA 62% of all households in the United States have a pet, and there are approximately 78.2 million dogs that are pets in the country.? People love their pets, but there?s something special about the bond between a dog and its human owners that some people can?t explain.? Owning a dog can be a very rewarding experience.? You form a special bond between another living thing, and you have a bond that will last until the day one of you passes.

A Note About Safety

Dog breeds all have different temperaments and quirks, but every dog should be judged by their own unique personality.? There are some dogs people think are natural born trouble makers, but almost every dog can be trained with the right techniques.? It should be stated that you shouldn?t try to train a ?problem dog? on your own.? Some dogs that have behavioral problems can be violent and unpredictable, and you should have a professional dog trainer try to train your dog.? You should also take other people?s safety into consideration.? If you have young children or elderly people at home, you shouldn?t try to turn a wild and aggressive dog into a housedog.? If you do have a friendly and well behaved dog that just needs a little training, try out a few of these tips during your next training session.

Pay Attention To Behavior

You want to train your dog to be less fearful around new people and dogs, but every time you bring them to the dog park they cower and try to hide from others.? Your dog?s behavior isn?t showing you that they just need more time to get used to people.? Their fearful behavior is a sign that your dog just doesn?t like crowds.? Pay attention to your dog?s behavior during your training sessions, and if they seem uncomfortable or afraid take a break from training for a little bit.

Be Consistent

When it comes to training your dog consistency is key.? If you tell your dog ?no? when he jumps on a couch or a piece of furniture, and your family member or a friend allows the dog to be on the chair or couch, your dog is going to be getting a mixed message about what behavior is okay and what behavior isn?t.? Let your other people who live with you know which behaviors you?re training your dog about so that your pup will be getting a consistent training message.

Have Realistic Expectations

Changing behavior takes a lot of time and practice, so you need to understand that their bad behavior won?t change just after a few training sessions.? It?s important for pet owners to understand that some behavior we find troublesome is natural to dogs.? You may be able to train your dog to not bark at every person who walks past your house, but you won?t be able to keep your dog completely silent.? Also take into account behaviors that are normal for their breed.? The blue pitbull puppies for sale are cute, but their breed loves to exercise and run around, so you need to understand that your dog is always going to be a little excited during their walk.? It?s never too late to change behavior, but anything you try to change will take a long time to take place.

Chris just bought a new puppy and he wantes to make sure it is trained correctly. He decides to do some research and take a few classes to become educated on the proper and safe ways to train a dog.

WHO to decide whether MERS is global health emergency

The World Health Organization will convene an emergency teleconference of global disease experts tomorrow to decide whether MERS, the Middle Eastern coronavirus that has killed 44 people ? including one person in the UK last week ? should be declared a public health emergency. Such a declaration would put governments on heightened alert for the virus, just as many prepare to go on a Ramadan pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, home of most MERS cases so far.

This is the second time this emergency procedure, set up under the WHO's International Health Regulations which took effect in 2007, has been invoked. The first occasion was to declare the swine flu pandemic of 2009.

MERS emerged last year and is known to have infected 80 people so far. Experts think it jumped to humans from an animal host ? so far unknown ? and is currently capable of only limited spread among humans who are in close contact, for example, among families and to healthcare workers.

Keiji Fukuda, the WHO's head of health security, said this week that the MERS virus has been causing known cases at a steady rate of about 20 per month. Now, he says, it could go three ways: it could simply fade away, or continue at current levels ? or become more transmissible and start causing larger clusters of cases.

If the third scenario does materialise, a group of Emergency Committee experts will already have been put in place at the meeting to advise the WHO on how to respond, he says.

Ahead of the curve

Their first advice, to be released on Thursday, will be whether the WHO should declare MERS a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The effect of such a declaration, says David Harper, who heads the WHO's task force on both MERS and H7N9 bird flu, will be to move the virus up governments' list of priorities, so they can prepare a response if it turns up in their country. "The key thing is to be ahead of the curve if there is a change in the virus, for example, one that causes sustained human-to-human transmission," he says.

Virologists say we need to know whether the virus is in fact already circulating under the radar. Most known cases have been in older people with existing health problems, and more than half were fatal. But several cases have been found, especially in younger people, that were mild. If there have been a large number of such cases, it would mean the virus is less deadly than it might appear ? but also more widespread in the community, and therefore possibly more transmissible than we realise.

The way to measure this is to look for antibodies to the virus in a large number of people not known to have been infected. Efforts are now under way to try to do this, says Harper, using antibody tests developed in several labs.

If you're not having any issues with your Sony, why upgrade? The PQ difference between your current player and a new BDP would be non existent. Newer players do start faster, and have a boatload of apps, but other than that, the playback functionality is still the same. You might want to update the firmware on your BX1 if it has never been updated...

Alert level raised to Phase 3 on Mexico's Popocat?petl volcano

The Extinction Protocol
Mon, 08 Jul 2013 09:24 CDT

The intensity of the current eruptive phase for Mexico's Popocat?petl volcano remains high. A phase of particularly strong tremor accompanying continuous explosions and ash emissions occurred this morning. As a consequence of the elevated activity, CENAPRED raised the alert level to Yellow, Phase 3. An exclusion zone of 12 km radius around the volcano is in place. During the (intermittent) eruptions, a steam and ash plume is rising about 3 km above the crater. A giant SO2 plume can be seen drifting north from Popocatep?tl, which is notorious of its large SO2 output during eruptions. -Volcano Discovery

PFT: Hernandez reportedly didn't fail NFL drug test

weeden-1

It?s Monday.? You?re back at work, likely after having the last four days off.

You?re bored.? It?s lunch time (in some time zones).? PFT Live doesn?t return for two more weeks.

So instead of requiring you to scroll and click and scroll and click through the various pages of the Rumor Mill, we decided to put together for you a one-stop link dump of the biggest stories you may have missed during the many hours of non-work time, when your likelihood of searching the Internet for non-work reasons is considerably lower.

Here?s a stack of every story that mentioned Aaron Hernandez.? (It would be a good page to bookmark, if you?re looking for unsolicited suggestions.? Which would make the suggestion something other than unsolicited.)

Urban Meyer finally broke his silence regarding Hernandez.

Meyer shouldn?t have.

He really shouldn?t have.

Ditto for his wife and daughter.

The Pats now have a lot of Hernandez jerseys.

Patriots fans could soon be clamoring for the jersey of RB Shane Vereen.

John Harbaugh may have started an expensive new football tradition.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick opted not to honor a tradition about which Jim Harbaugh apparently feels strongly.

If Kapernick needs a 49ers hat, S Eric Reid can hook him up.

The Packers hope to retire No. 4 at some point in the next three years.

Jimmy isn?t retiring from the Browns.

If you don?t know Cardinals S Yeremiah Bell?s story, you should.

Trent Richardson?s injuries should be sufficiently healed to allow him to participate in training camp, where he may then suffer more injuries.

The Rams will become free agents after the 2014 season; so where will they go?

ESPN?s Ron Jaworski has Matthew Stafford in the middle of the pack of NFL starters.? (More than a few of the 15 teams whose starters came in ahead of Stafford would likely be willing to do a straight up trade.)

In Philly, rookie hazing apparently has gone the way of Taco Tuesday.

49ers rookie Lawrence Okoye likely didn?t expect American football to include teammates bashing other teammates with beer bottles.? Allegedly.

Giants QB Eli Manning now has bookend kids to go along with his bookend rings.

A former replacement ref got another gig this weekend.

A Ravens cheerleader died in a motorcycle accident on Friday.

Pat White has reconsidered his refusal to play positions other than quarterback.

Chilo Rachal says he didn?t quit on the Bears when he, you know, quit on the Bears.

The president who said he wasn?t a crook thought the NFL?s blackout policy was crooked.

Ravens LB Jameel McClain is still awaiting clearance to return from a spinal-cord contusion.

The Dirty Birds? new tailback won?t be getting his uniform very dirty in the preseason.

?That?s not a knife . . . that?s a knife.?

The Steelers want LB Lawrence Timmons to step up.

Former Ravens LB Ray Lewis wasn?t able to step up Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Lions DT Ndamukong Suh leads with tenderness.

Jags WR Justin Blackmon had surgery in a fairly tender spot.

The league may bar certain players from the Scouting Combine, but there?s only one way to get teams to take troubled players off the draft board, if that?s what the league wants to accomplish.

For a ?lost little puppy? Redskins RB Alfred Morris did a good job of getting fed last year.

?Gentlemen, start your Adderall!?

RGIII got hitched, and one of the guests was complaining about the Redskins name from the ceremony.

A Native American author has complained about the Commissioner?s support for the Redskins name.

Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson is acting a little like Raymond J. Johnson, Jr.

Someone slightly larger than a Leprechaun wants to play a football game in Ireland.

Rams WR Tavon Austin will let his mother handle his money.

Titans WR Kenny Britt kicked some of his money toward Britt?s high school team.

The squabble between Atlanta and a church over the money it will take to clear the way for a Falcons stadium is going next level.

Bears RB Michael Bush earned his money last season by playing with a bum shoulder.

Redskins FB Eric Kettani got some hate mail for taking NFL money when he otherwise would be on active duty.

Now get back to making your money by doing something other than surfing the Internet.? But we?ll be here when you take your next break.? In about five minutes.

National Team Coach ?Chepo? de la Torre Pelted With Beer by Mexican Soccer Fans at Rose Bowl (Video)

Mexican soccer fans are a demanding lot ? no matter where they are or what the circumstances are.

Some are fed up with how Mexico?s men?s national soccer team has been performing lately, so they?ve decided to share their feelings and beer with head coach Manuel ?Chep? de la Torre.

On Sunday,?Mexico fans in Southern California were upset following their team?s 2-1 loss to Panama in its opening game of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. They pelted De la Torre with plastic cups and bottles of beer as he was leaving the field at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

The embattled de la Torre did not react to the beers or cries of ?Fuera Chepo!? (?Chepo out!?). He just kept his head down and walked straight into the tunnel.

Mexico has failed to impress so far in the final round of FIFA World Cup qualifying, winning just one of its six games so far and drawing the other five. ?El Tri? didn?t look any better in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, exiting the tournament after the group stage.

Although Mexico is using a ?B? team in the Gold Cup, the expectations of its fans remain sky high. Despite the loss to Panama, Mexico is still in the regional championship tournament, and it is likely that ?El Tri? will factor in the final reckoning.?However, it remains to be seen whether or not de la Torre will still be in charge when the final takes place on July 28.

See objects fly at de la Torre in the video below.

Have a question for Marcus Kwesi O?Mard? Send it to him via Twitter at @NESNsoccer, NESN Soccer?s Facebook page or send it here. He will pick a few questions to answer every week for his mailbag.
