Charter Communications Fourth-Quarter Financials Virtually Flat ...

NEW YORK - The new CEO of Charter Communications on Monday told analysts that "this is a great company with even greater potential" as the cable operator reported a fourth-quarter loss that was virtually unchanged amid a slight revenue gain.

"I'm excited about the year ahead, and I believe there is significant opportunity for growth here," said Charter's new president and CEO Tom Rutledge, the former COO of Cablevision Systems, who has been in his job for two weeks, on the firm's quarterly earnings conference call. "My focus will be on ensuring that the fundamentals of taking care of our customers are constantly improving, that we offer products and services that are better than any alternative and that we are a company that customers want to do business with. The team here is terrific, and I'm excited to be on board and to help Charter reach its full potential."

Rutledge vowed to concentrate on getting Charter back to video subscriber growth and said that pricing, packaging and technological innovation will be key focus areas for him. "While still early on, I'm impressed with the team, the operations and the strategy for future growth," he emphasized.?

Asked if Charter needs to do any deals, he said it can be "a very successful company at its current size." Asked for comparisons with his former employer, Rutledge said Charter is less clustered than Cablevision, requiring different marketing strategies. Asked if he could bring some of Cablevision's iPad and other video strategies to Charter, the new CEO told analysts that he wasn't ready to unveil any new video strategies, but asked observers to stay tuned.

The company's fourth-quarter loss of $67 million compared to $70 million in the year-ago period. Wall Street had expected a narrower loss. Revenue rose 2.8 percent, or 2.6 percent on a pro forma basis, to $1.83 billion.

Charter ended 2011 with 4.09 million video users, down from 4.31 million at the end of 2010, after losing 45,500 in the fourth quarter. The cable firm said its total customer relationships grew 8,700 in the latest quarter, compared with a loss of 35,700 in the year-ago period.

"This will be an important year for Charter and our customers, and I'm excited to be a part of it," said Rutledge in a statement in the company's earnings report. "Charter executed well on its strategic priorities in 2011, as demonstrated by enhanced product offerings, an improved customer relationship trend, and solid financial performance. As we move into 2012, our team is committed to a high standard of customer service delivery and operational excellence in all aspects of our business and to making the right investments for the future. Focusing on these fundamentals provides a real opportunity to grow our business."

ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2012) ? Millions of adults suffer from the incurable disease multiple sclerosis (MS). It is relatively certain that MS is an autoimmune disease in which the body's own defense cells attack the myelin in the brain and spinal cord. Myelin enwraps the nerve cells and is important for their function of transmitting stimuli as electrical signals. There are numerous unconfirmed hypotheses on the development of MS, one of which has now been refuted by the neuroimmunologists in their current research: The death of oligodendrocytes, as the cells that produce the myelin sheath are called, does not trigger MS.

Neurodegenerative hypothesis obsolete

With their research, the scientists disprove the so-called "neurodegenerative hypothesis," which was based on observations that certain patients exhibited characteristic myelin damage without a discernable immune attack. In the popular hypothesis, the scientists assume that MS-triggering myelin damage occurs without the involvement of the immune system. In this scenario, the immune response against myelin would be the result -- and not the cause -- of this pathogenic process.

The aim of the research project was to confirm or disprove this hypothesis based on a new mouse model. Using genetic tricks, they induced myelin defects without alerting the immune defense. "At the beginning of our study, we found myelin damage that strongly resembled the previous observations in MS patients," explains Burkhard Becher, a professor at the University of Zurich. "However, not once were we able to observe an MS-like autoimmune disease." In order to ascertain whether an active immune defense causes the disease based on a combination of an infection and myelin damage, the researchers conducted a variety of further experiments -- without success. "We were unable to detect an MS-like disease -- no matter how intensely we stimulated the immune system," says Ari Waisman, a professor from the University Medical Center Mainz. "We therefore consider the neurodegenerative hypothesis obsolete."

Focus on immune system

The teams involved in the study want to continue researching the cause and origins of MS. "In light of these and other new findings, research on the pathogenesis of MS is bound to concentrate less on the brain and more on the immune system in future," says Professor Thorsten Buch from the Technischen Universit?t M?nchen.

By contrast, income from capital is lightly taxed. Unrealized capital gains are untaxed, realized gains are taxed at a maximum rate of just 15 percent, and gains held until death are never taxed. Moreover, wealthy hedge fund managers are permitted to treat their managerial fees as if they are capital gains, something that is called ?carried interest.? Dividends on corporate stock are also taxed at a maximum rate of 15 percent.

The wealthier one is, the less his or her income is derived from labor. According to the Tax Policy Center, households in the middle three quintiles get about 70 percent of their total income from wages and salaries. Those in the top quintile get 55 percent of their income from labor.

For those in the top 1 percent of the income distribution, only about 30 percent of their income comes from labor and for those in the top tenth of 1 percent, just 20 percent of their income comes from labor.

By contrast, those with low and middle incomes derive very little of it from capital. The bottom 80 percent of households get less than 4 percent of their income from capital. For those in the top quintile, however, 16 percent of their income comes from capital. And among the top 1 percent it is 35 percent.

But looking at the data this way understates how low taxes on capital benefit the wealthy, because if one looks only at capital income, virtually all of it goes to them. Those in the top quintile get 86 percent of all the capital income in the United States ? $960 billion out of $1.1 trillion in total capital income. Most of that went to the top 1 percent, which received $633 billion ? 57 percent of the total. And the top 0.1 percent got two-thirds of that.

The point is that a tax system that lightly taxes capital and heavily taxes labor is necessarily going to benefit the wealthy. As this chart illustrates, federal tax rates on the wealthy have been falling since 1978, when Congress cut the maximum capital gains rate to 28 percent from 35 percent.

We rationalize this mainly on the grounds that increasing the stock of capital is good for everyone. For example, it will raise productivity, which in the long run will raise wages for all workers.
