The Mighty Eagle, NASA"s robotic prototype lander managed out of NASA"s Marshall Space Flight Center, recently completed a test series to monitor its systems functionality after coming out of winter storage. This latest series included a test flight that was recorded by the Quad-Copter -- a small vehicle also developed at Marshall that was equipped with a video camera allowing for never-before-seen footage of the Mighty Eagle.
The Mighty Eagle, nicknamed after one of the characters in the popular Angry Birds game, is a three-legged prototype vehicle. It is 4 feet tall, 8 feet in diameter and weighs about 700 pounds when fueled. It is a green vehicle, fueled by 90 percent pure hydrogen peroxide, and is guided by an onboard computer that activates the thrusters to power the craft's movements.
"We were approached by the Mighty Eagle team to film the vehicle in flight, and we thought it would be a great collaboration," said Garrick Merrill, a member of the Aero-M team and a computer engineer in the Space Systems Department at Marshall. "It gave us an opportunity to test the copter in a flight situation, and we were really pleased with the results. It really was a win-win situation for both teams -- giving us both important data we can use on future flights."
The Quad-Copter is an achievement in itself. The vehicle was designed and built by the Aero-M team at Marshall as part of the 2012 Unmanned Aerial Systems, or UAS, competition between various NASA centers. The Marshall team was made up of young engineers from across the center who were tasked with designing a vehicle that could perform an autonomous search and rescue mission to locate people after a small plane crash. The Quad-Copter is built with off-the-shelf, hobbyist-grade parts and uses an open-source flight computer. The initial design of the vehicle uses a two-megapixel IP camera, but for the Mighty Eagle flights the IP camera was removed and a GoPro video camera was attached to provide high-definition video.
"Working with the Aero-M team has been great," said Jason Adam, flight manager for the Mighty Eagle. "The data we have been able to get from seeing the flight in a way we"ve not before will be really helpful as we prepare for future flights."
Those future flights include a new test series for the Mighty Eagle in July that will be demonstrating a system fitted on the vehicle for optical hazard avoidance. Roughly 200 tons of dirt from a quarry in the western United States will be brought in by rail to simulate a celestial body. The vehicle will then work through a series of tests to demonstrate the new system"s ability to detect hazards that could cause damage to the vehicle during an actual lunar landing situation. The data will be used to develop hazard avoidance systems for potential future small robotic missions. The Mighty Eagle team intends to collaborate with the Quad-Copter team for a similar flight in July.
The "Mighty Eagle" lander was developed by the Marshall Center and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., for NASA Headquarters' Planetary Sciences Division, Science Mission Directorate. Key partners in this project include the Von Braun Center for Science and Innovation, which includes the Science Applications International Corporation, Dynetics Corp., and Teledyne Brown Engineering Inc., all of Huntsville.
NASA will use the Mighty Eagle and its larger counterpart, the Project Morpheus prototype lander -- being tested at NASA's Johnson Space Center -- to mature the technology needed to develop a new generation of small, smart, versatile robotic landers capable of achieving scientific and exploration goals on the surface of planetary bodies.

CHICAGO, May 29 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, whose agenda has been frustrated by Republicans in Washington, said on Wednesday he believed his party could reclaim control of the House of Representatives in the 2014 midterm elections but conceded it was an uphill struggle.
The party in power in the White House typically loses seats in the first midterm election after a presidential campaign, and many political analysts believe Democrats could lose seats in Congress in 2014.
But Obama, appearing at fundraisers for Democratic House candidates in his hometown of Chicago, said he believed 2014 could prove different.
"We've got a great chance to take back the House," he told more than 100 people gathered at a cocktail reception in an ornate ballroom at the Chicago Hilton, where ticket prices ranged from $1,000 per person to $5,000 per couple.
Obama, who was reelected in 2012, told donors that he is willing to work with Republicans on issues like creating jobs through national infrastructure programs, but said he has a hard time finding Republican lawmakers willing to compromise.
"We've got a politics that is stuck right now. And the reason it's stuck is because people spend more time thinking about the next election than they do thinking about the next generation," Obama said.
Obama said he is willing to work with Republicans, who currently control the House, but accused them of "obstructionism" and "an interest only in scoring political points or placating a base."
It was the fifth time since April that Obama has traveled to raise money for Democrats running for Congress in 2014.
In Chicago, about 70 people paid $10,000 per person or $32,400 per couple to attend dinner in the sculpture-filled apartment of Bettylu and Paul Saltzman, longtime Chicago Democratic activists and some of Obama's earliest political benefactors.
Obama told the group, which he described as "kind of an Obama cabal," that a Democratic-controlled House is key to achieving goals he views as his legacy, like curbing climate change and gun violence.
"My only interest is making sure that when I look back 20 years from now, I say, 'I accomplished everything that I could while I had this incredible privilege to advance the interests of the broadest number of Americans,'" he said.
But he admitted winning back the House won't be easy.
"This will be hard," he said, blaming "gerrymandering" or the redistricting process which many Democratic groups have said unfairly benefits Republicans.
First Lady Michelle Obama also spoke at two Democratic fundraisers on Wednesday in Manhattan.
"We need all of you to get engaged in every special election and every midterm election all across this country," she told donors who paid between $5,000 and $25,000 to attend a fundraiser in the Manhattan apartment of fashion designer Tory Burch.
"We need you to keep on writing those checks and, if you haven't maxed out, max out. Get your friends to max out," she said, referring to caps on donations set by U.S. election law.
At a Park Avenue gala with about 350 people who paid $1,250 to $32,400 to attend, the first lady was introduced by basketball player Jason Collins, who recently came out as the nation's first openly gay major professional sports player. CHAFFEE, Mo. (AP) ? A Missouri highway overpass that partially collapsed when rail cars smashed into one of its support pillars after a cargo train collision was about 15 years old and in good condition but just couldn't withstand the impact, a sheriff said.
Seven people in two cars on the overpass were injured, none seriously, when two 40-foot sections of the overpass crumpled early Saturday.
"You're driving down the road and the next thing you know the bridge is not there. ... It could have been really bad," Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said. He said the bridge, though in good condition, couldn't withstand the impact of the rail cars.
The collapse occurred after a Union Pacific train struck the side of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train at a rail intersection, Walter said. Derailed rail cars then struck columns supporting the Highway M overpass, causing it to buckle and partially collapse.
The derailed rail cars were loaded with scrap metal, automobiles and auto parts.
The National Transportation Safety Board has begun an investigation into the cause of the cargo train collision near Chaffee, a small town southwest of Cape Girardeau.
The two cars were the only ones on the overpass at the time, authorities said.
Five people in the two cars were taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, as were a Union Pacific train conductor and an engineer. All seven were released later Saturday, hospital spokeswoman Felecia Blanton said.
Blanton said she was bracing for the worst, given the dramatic footage posted online from the early news coverage. She said it was "a real blessing" that the injuries were relatively minor, the most serious being a fracture.
A diesel fire also broke out in one of the locomotives after the collision, but was quickly put out, Walter said. He said a deputy arriving early on the scene pulled the two Union Pacific employees out of the wrecked engine, which became lodged next to the train's second engine.
The accident came more than a week after a commuter train derailment in Connecticut that injured 70 people and disrupted service for days. That accident involved a railroad corridor used by tens of thousands of commuters north of New York City.
In Washington state this past week, a bridge collapsed when a truck driver's load bumped against the steel framework.
NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said while the investigations into both collapses are in the early stages "there is no similarity" between the Missouri accident and the bridge collapse in Washington, which sent two vehicles and three people falling into the chilly water.
He noted that the Missouri bridge was rated "good" after its last inspection in February.
"This was not because of any lack of integrity of the bridge in southeast Missouri, but because of a train that derailed and had a bunch of rail cars slamming around," he said.
The Union Pacific train was carrying primarily automobiles or auto parts from Illinois to Texas, said UP spokeswoman Calli Hite. She said about a dozen UP railcars derailed but there was no immediate estimate on the damages.
BNSF spokesman Andy Williams said about 12 cars on the 75-car BNSF train derailed. The BNSF crew was not hurt.
Sumwalt said the NTSB investigation to determine a likely cause will include routine testing of railroad employees for drugs and alcohol, testing of the track and rail signals and examinationof the video footage from the front of the train.
Investigators also are expected to scrutinize the bridge's design, Sumwalt said.

PARIS (AP) ? French anti-terrorism investigators were combing video surveillance tapes Sunday as they continued their manhunt for a suspect who stabbed a soldier in the throat in the commercial district of La Defense outside Paris.
The 23-year-old soldier, Cedric Cordier, was in uniform patrolling the busy underground corridors where shops and crowded public transport lines converge beneath the famous Arch of La Defense.
Saturday's stabbing came days after a British soldier was hacked to death on a London street in broad daylight in a suspected terrorist attack that has raised fears of potential copycat strikes. However, there was no immediate confirmation of any link between the two attacks.
French police have surveillance video of a suspect taken before and after the attack. There are several security cameras operated by public transport agency RATP and others placed throughout the underground shopping center, according to one police official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss terrorism investigations.
The official, who has not seen the videos himself, said investigators describe the suspect as tall. He couldn't provide any other description of the suspect. Police are going over videos to try to identify the suspect, trace his escape route and determine whether he was acting alone, the official said.
Cordier remained hospitalized Sunday, but officials said his throat wound wasn't life-threatening.
The French soldier was on a group patrol as part of a national protection program when he was attacked from behind.
Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who visited Cordier at the hospital Saturday evening, said he had been targeted because he was a soldier. Anti-terrorism investigators are leading the hunt for the attacker, but officials have yet to determine whether terrorism is involved, the police official said. Police also questioned witnesses to the attack.
Speaking shortly after the attack while on an official visit to Ethiopia, President Francois Hollande said that while "all hypotheses" will be investigated, there didn't appear to be a link with Wednesday's deadly attack in London.
French security forces have been on heightened alert since their country launched a military intervention in the African nation of Mali in January to regain territory seized by Islamic radicals. British Prime Minister David Cameron was in Paris meeting with Hollande when he first received word of the London attack.
Last year, three French paratroopers were killed by a man police described as a French-born Islamic extremist who then went on to strike a Jewish school in southern France, killing four more people.

But the words and statements that have emerged since yesterday?s event point to a planned and public condemnation of gay marriage, immigration, and other topics considered by the far right as a threat to French society.
On his personal blog the historian, Dominique Venner, condemned the ?vile? gay marriage law, in a piece dated May 21, the day of his suicide. He called on protesters planning to amass on?May 26?not to limit their discontent to just the law but against the ?peril? of immigration to France from North Africa.
In what may have been a reference to his impending suicide, he wrote:?"There will certainly need to be new, spectacular, symbolic gestures to shake off the sleepiness ... and re-awaken the memories of our origins."?
Hours after the suicide, a message apparently written by Mr. Venner was read by a friend on a conservative radio station: "I believe it is necessary to sacrifice myself to break with the lethargy that is overwhelming us," the friend read on the air. "I am killing myself to awaken slumbering consciences."?
France?s far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who has risen in polls, wrote in a tweet?Tuesday?of her respect for Venner, calling his suicide "eminently political."?
Notre Dame ? the symbol of French Catholicism ? was quickly evacuated. The cathedral this year marks 850 years since construction began ? but commemorative events celebrating the anniversary will likely be overshadowed, in history, by Venner?s action.
France?s Interior Minister Manuel Valls told reporters: "Notre Dame is the cathedral of Paris, one of the capital's ??and the country's ??most beautiful monuments, so we realize how symbolic this event truly is."

BOSTON (AP) ? Terry Francona felt right at home in the visiting dugout.
Back at Fenway Park as a manager for the first time since being let go by the Boston Red Sox in 2011, he was calm and occasionally funny while wearing the cap of the Cleveland Indians.
After all, he's back in baseball.
"Being in a dugout or clubhouse, there's no place I'm more comfortable," Francona said Thursday night as he sat in the opposite dugout from where he spent eight seasons as Boston's manager. "Part of the reason I'm OK with this is I'm really proud of coming here with this hat on, this uniform.
"And that takes nothing away from the eight years I was here. It makes it easier for me to look back on some of the fonder memories and now you start new ones in another place."
In his first season as their manager in 2004, the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. Three years later, they won another. And four years after that he was let go following a September collapse that cost the Red Sox a playoff berth.
"I wish the ending would have been different," Francona said before Thursday night's opener of a four-game series.
He spent last season as an ESPN analyst then was hired to replace Manny Acta, who lost 94 games.
The Indians started Thursday in first place in the AL Central.
"I wasn't going to Cleveland to go to pasture," Francona said. "Every game means the same to me here in Cleveland as it ever did here (in Boston). Our goals are exactly the same ? to win the game we're playing. But I like where I'm at and maybe for me, where I'm at in my life and baseball, this is a really good place."
There's less media and fan scrutiny. And there are fewer big-name players than he had in Boston where he managed Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz and Josh Beckett.
After Francona spoke with reporters for about 20 minutes, Ortiz walked into the dugout with a big smile and embraced his former manager.
Francona said he hadn't had much time to think how emotional the night would be.
"Everybody kept saying, 'well, are you going to be emotional?' You don't know," he said. "We played a late game (Wednesday) night. We got in about 5 (a.m.), got up at 8. It's been a busy day and, for people that know me, I really don't think that far ahead. I know I've been accused of that in the games, but I just kind of take it as it comes."
After the first inning, a video tribute on the center field scoreboard showed former Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills, now Francona's third-base coach, former Red Sox catcher Kevin Cash, now Francona's bullpen coach, and former Red Sox players Justin Masterson, Mike Aviles and Rich Hill, all with the Indians.
It ended with several scenes of Francona in the dugout and on the field as Boston's manager, one of them in which he hugged Martinez.
He received a standing ovation and remained in his dugout. He waved his left hand and patted his heart with his right hand.
Francona said he hadn't spent time thinking how the fans might react.
"These are some of the best fans in the world," he said. "If you like baseball, this is a good place to be and I got to be a part of that. I feel very fortunate."
Francona actually managed as a Fenway visitor while with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997-2000, going 4-4. This season, the Red Sox swept the Indians in a three-game series at Cleveland from April 16-18.
Francona had been back at Fenway several times last year. He returned with ESPN and for the 100th anniversary celebration of the park on April 20.
Among the bigger cheers that day was the chant of "Tito!" that greeted him. He had been angered by a newspaper article revealing details about personal troubles during the 2011 season and said he would not attend but then relented.
"He did a lot to really put Red Sox baseball back on top of the world," Masterson said. "Everyone here loved him. Everyone on our team loves him. And everyone in Cleveland loves him. He's just an incredible guy."
On Thursday, he visited with clubhouse attendants and Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick. He spoke with his good friend John Farrell, who took over as Boston manager after Bobby Valentine was fired following a last-place finish in which the team went 69-93.
Aviles ended up in Cleveland after being traded by Toronto. The Blue Jays had obtained him to allow Boston to hire Farrell, who had been their manager.
"It is a great opportunity to play for Tito again," Aviles said. "You couldn't ask for a better manager."
Francona said he hasn't changed much since he managed the Red Sox, although the year off refreshed him.
But his goal remains the same, no matter which dugout he manages from ? just win.
"Every game I've ever been here I've never rooted against the Red Sox," he said. "Now I will be."

Sierra Coffman's life changed after not one, but two turns of a car key.
Coffman, 17, of Bartow was the winner of Bartow Ford's 20th annual Drive for Excellence event Saturday.
A junior at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland, she won a 2014 Ford Mustang V6 convertible as part of the car dealer's yearly event to honor local students who excel in the classroom.
"I still can't believe it because I'm 17 and I have a $35,000 car. It's ridiculous," Coffman said.
"I think it's really cool that they give this opportunity to people.
"They pay people for working hard during their high school career."
The Drive for Excellence contest is held for high school juniors and seniors who have averages of A or B with perfect attendance. Students enter by showing their report cards at the Bartow Ford dealership, competing to be a top qualifier. The better their grades, the more forms they get to be entered into a drawing to become a top qualifier.
At Saturday's event, featuring live music, games, raffles and refreshment, the top qualifiers were invited to grab a car key and try to open the Mustang's front door, with the understanding that the student whose key unlocks the door wins the car.
Coffman was the second of 19 students to try their luck.
"When I went up there and it turned I stared shaking, thinking, 'Oh my gosh, am I going to win?' Coffman said. "When it didn't open, my heart just dropped."
After it didn't open, Coffman stayed to watch who the winner would be.
Coffman said after about six more students attempted to unlock the car, she realized she may have turned the key the wrong direction and wanted another shot. This time, the driver's side door unlocked.
"The second time she definitely broke down and started to cry, then her dad came up and hugged her," said Kimberly Vigil, marketing assistant for Bartow Ford.
"It was a great moment."
Coffman, who plans to study to become an orthopedic surgeon, said her friends were mostly jealous but still wanted to see her new car when she pulled into the school parking lot Monday.
During the 20 years of this contest, Bartow Ford has given away vehicles totaling more than $500,000 in value.

Microsoft already gave us a look at its next-gen Kinect alongside the Xbox One, but today the company circled back to announce an update to the Windows version of its sensor. Don't get too excited yet, though: the update won't debut until 2014. Still, Redmond has shared details about some of the enhancements it says will "revolutionize computing experiences," such as a higher-definition camera, expanded field of view and improved motion tracking -- essentially the same improvements we'll see on the new Kinect for the Xbox One. Microsoft says developers will learn more at the Build 2013 conference in June, so stay tuned.
