US women win 5th straight gold, rout France 86-50

LONDON (AP) ? The names change, not the results. Just call the U.S. women's basketball team Olympic champion ? again.

The Americans won their fifth straight gold medal Saturday, routing France 86-50 and putting more distance between themselves and the rest of the world heading into the 2016 Rio Games.

"It just shows the depth and talent in our country. Women's basketball, it's our sport ? it's our sport," said Diana Taurasi, who has been a part of the last three gold medals. "We grew up playing since we were little and give it every single little bit of energy we have."

Candace Parker scored 21 points, including eight straight during the game-changing run in the second quarter as the U.S. won its 41st straight Olympic game.

This one was special.

Taurasi, who said she doesn't get emotional, cried receiving her gold medal and then paraded around draped in an American flag.

"A little trip down memory lane," Taurasi said. "The track record was going through my head. My parents, Coach was there. It was just a lot of things hit me at once and that's what happened."

The winning streak started in the bronze medal game in 1992. In that stretch, the Americans have won by nearly 30 points a game. Only one team has stayed within single digits of them, and they've lost just once in major international competitions, to Russia in the semifinals of the 2006 world championship.

Coach Geno Auriemma didn't want to get drawn into the debate of where this team ranks among the five that have won the gold.

"The United States has had great teams since 1996 and we are just another one on the list," he said. "We accomplished the same thing they did and I don't know if that separates us. I think it just makes us equal."

Teresa Edwards, Dawn Staley, Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie got the amazing run started, and Taurasi, Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings have continued it.

With young stars Parker, Maya Moore and Tina Charles a big part of the success in London it doesn't look like the run will end anytime soon.

"The players give back. You have players coming back for a third Olympics to show the younger players what it takes to win a gold medal," said Parker, a two-time Olympian. "I learned a lot from Tina Thompson, Lisa Leslie, Katie Smith and now Dee, Tamika, Sue. It's just the passing down of what it takes to win. That commitment to USA Basketball."

Catchings said the Americans "just wanted to keep that legacy going."

Edwards, a five-time Olympian, said no worry there.

"The legacy is real," said Edwards, who had a front-row seat Saturday night. "What these kids have been doing is amazing. Without much time to practice. In the middle of the WNBA season. And they look good. It's like the whole world knows who we are. I'm really proud of them.

"They're definitely among some of the best" U.S. teams.

The U.S. faced its only challenge of the London Games when Australia took a four-point halftime lead. It was the first time in 12 years that the Americans had been trailing at the half. There was no panic or worry. They just stepped up their defense and vanquished the Australians, winning by 13 points.

"It's not easy to just be put together and be expected to win a gold medal," Taurasi said. "It's a special feeling."

France, which came into the gold medal game unbeaten, stayed with the U.S. for the first 12 minutes before Parker took over. She scored eight straight points during a 13-2 run that gave the U.S. a 37-23 advantage. Twice the 6-foot-4 Parker grabbed the rebound on the defensive end and dribbled up through the defense scoring on the other.

While Parker ? who also had 11 rebounds ? was providing the offense, the Americans turned up their defense, holding France to just one basket over the final 7:25 of the half.

"We always felt like as long as we played our best ... we'd be all right," Bird said.

The U.S. led by 12 at the half and poured it on in the third quarter. France got within 41-31 but the U.S. scored 13 of the next 14 points any thoughts of a monumental upset were forgotten.

On one sequence, Catchings got a steal and passed to Bird, who hit Moore in perfect stride for a finger-roll lay-in down the lane. It only got worse from there for France, which was making its Olympic debut.

The Americans bottled up France's flashy point guard Celine Dumerc, who made only field goal in the first half and finished with eight points.

"I'm just happy to have this medal around my neck," Dumerc said of her silver. "We lost to a very good team and we made history for women's basketball in our country."

Advance in X-ray imaging shines light on nanomaterials

ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2012) ? A new advance in X-ray imaging has revealed the dramatic three-dimensional shape of gold nanocrystals, and is likely to shine a light on the structure of other nano-scale materials.

Described August 7 in Nature Communications, the new technique improves the quality of nanomaterial images, made using X-ray diffraction, by accurately correcting distortions in the X-ray light.

Dr Jesse Clark, lead author of the study from the London Centre for Nanotechnology said: "With nanomaterials playing an increasingly important role in many applications, there is a real need to be able to obtain very high quality three dimensional images of these samples.

"Up until now we have been limited by the quality of our X-rays. Here we have demonstrated that with imperfect X-ray sources we can still obtain very high quality images of nanomaterials."

Up until now, most nanomaterial imaging has been done using electron microscopy. X-ray imaging is an attractive alternative as X-rays penetrate further into the material than electrons and can be used in ambient or controlled environments.

However, making lenses that focus X-rays is very difficult. As an alternative, scientists use the indirect method of coherent diffraction imaging (CDI), where the diffraction pattern of the sample is measured (without lenses) and inverted to an image by computer.

Nobel Prize winner Lawrence Bragg suggested this method in 1939 but had no way to determine the missing phases of the diffraction, which are today provided by computer algorithms.

CDI can be performed very well at the latest synchrotron X-ray sources such as the UK's Diamond Light Source which have much higher coherent flux than earlier machines. CDI is gaining momentum in the study of nanomaterials, but, until now, has suffered from poor image quality, with broken or non-uniform density. This had been attributed to imperfect coherence of the X-ray light used.

The dramatic three-dimensional images of gold nanocrystals presented in this study demonstrate that this distortion can be corrected by appropriate modelling of the coherence function.

Professor Ian Robinson, London Centre for Nanotechnology and author of the paper said: "The corrected images are far more interpretable that ever obtained previously and will likely lead to new understanding of structure of nanoscale materials."

The method should also work for free-electron-laser, electron- and atom-based diffractive imaging.

It may be the middle of summer, but it is primetime for folks in the retail advertising business to plan their holiday season campaigns.

Today we released our report focusing on retail advertising. (For those NOT in this vertical, keep reading?there are insights for you to learn from here too.)

Overall, we see a few volume trends. First, a general increase in retailers utilizing video advertising; second, impression volume spikes in two fourth quarters indicating a tie to the general strategy of TV buying. As we look deeper into the breakdown of the weekly volume, we see a significant ramp up from Q3 into Q4 and then a drop off as soon as the final holiday shopping week is over.? This clearly indicates a ?mirroring? of their TV strategy for their online plans.

But, simply copying over the broadcast plan into the digital world isn?t going to maximize the potential.? In the digital world, engaging with viewers is intrinsic. It is a space that fosters back and forth ?communication? and sharing of information.

By the very nature of their business, retailers are looking to create direct transactions. Because of this, they are in a great position to engage directly with consumers and find the trends and techniques that work best which can help other advertising verticals reach their goals.

Looking more closely at the peak holiday shopping season, we saw some interesting findings. Of all the publishers that were included on retail advertising buys, 76% of them had the capability of running an interactive video ad. Yet, retailers only utilized interactive video ads on 21% of their total buys.? The technology advancements are being made to make the next step in digital advertising, but in Q4 2011, retailers missed a unique opportunity to interact directly with viewers.

This year, as more advertisers across the board start using interactive elements within their video ads, we expect to see that reflection of growth during the holiday season from the potential pioneers? ? retailers.

August 2, Breitbart.com dropped the bombshell that Team Obama was trying to disenfranchise our troops in Ohio by filing a lawsuit against the state because there ?was no rational basis? to allow troops to vote up to three days before the election in order to accommodate such things as deployments, training exercises, etc. That Team Obama knew the military generally voted for conservative, pro-military candidates (i.e, Mitt Romney) and wanted to suppress any votes for Romney.

Team Obama opined?in a fervent religious tone that Ohio?s statute accommodating our troops? extenuating circumstances wasn?t ?fair? to the other voters.

Of course the question is, if the lawsuit was so noble, why was it done in secret? When the DOJ was suing states over voter ID requirements, Eric Holder was shouting from the highest mountain in righteous indignation.

The answer is that they knew the public would be outraged.

Now that the truth is known, Team Obama and their surrogates are going into spin mode, focusing on Romney, who joined in the collective outrage at Obama?s perfidiousness.

Team Obama claims it is a false issue. That it has no basis.That it is ludicrous to believe that they want to disenfranchise our troops in order to suppress votes for Romney.

Really?

Is that why the Washington Examiner, the Washington Times, and hundreds of other organizations have substantiated everything the original Breitbart.com post stated?

Is that why over a dozen military groups, including the National Guard Association, Association of the United States Army, Association of the United States Navy, and the Marine Corps League are vehemently opposed to Team Obama?s lawsuit?

Three dead in breakaway rebel attack in Philippines

A breakaway group of Muslim rebels used chainsaws to launch simultaneous attacks across 11 towns in the southern Philippines Monday, leaving at least three dead, officials said.

A civilian died in crossfire, while the army said the bodies of two Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) had been recovered hours after the attacks in Maguindanao province.

The rebels used chainsaws to bring down electricity pylons before dawn, plunging several towns into darkness, and then opened fire on army detachments, police and the military said.

"Sporadic heavy fighting continued in the morning, but we have set up roadblocks while the military went after the rebels," provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Marcelo Pintac told AFP.

He said that as well as cutting off electricity, the rebels were also believed to have planted improvised bombs along a major highway that runs through the strife-torn province of Maguindanao, where the fighting erupted.

Provincial governor Esmael Mangudadatu said "hundreds" of villagers were believed to have fled their homes as government forces repelled the rebels with helicopter gunships.

A section of the main highway that connects Maguindanao to other provinces was closed to motorists as the fighting spilled over to the area, he said.

"They sabotaged power lines and attacked 11 towns. We are now largely in control except for a section of the highway that remains closed," he said.

"We are trying to reach out to them so we can have a truce, but in the meantime, commuters are advised to stay put and avoid travelling to the area."

The government's chief presidential adviser on the peace process, Teresita Deles, said the attack was apparently meant to derail negotiations with the larger, more mainstream Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The BIFF is headed by Ameril Umbrakato, a hardline Saudi Arabian-educated guerrilla who split from the 12,000-strong MILF, which has dropped its bid for full independence and is negotiating for an autonomous region.

Umbrakato has boasted of having about 5,000 armed fighters, though military officials believe he only has a few hundred under his command.

"This act of aggression...is meant to derail the peace process," Deles said in a statement, as she sought to assure the public the violence would not affect a new round of talks set to resume in Malaysia this week.

Umbrakato had previously accused his former comrades of betraying the rebellion's ultimate goal of an independent Islamic state in the troubled south.

The government has said it hopes to sign a peace deal with the MILF by the end of the year, but has asked the MILF leadership to help contain Umbrakato's forces. BIFF opposes peace talks with the government.

The Muslim insurgency on the island of Mindanao began in the early 1970s and the fighting has killed some 150,000 people, miring large parts of the south in deep poverty.

Abu Misri, a spokesman for Umbrakato, however told AFP by phone that the attack was launched to avenge the alleged unprovoked killing of a BIFF member by troops in June.

He said his men were under instructions not to stand down, despite rebel positions being pounded by helicopter gunships.

"We are not harming civilians. But we are prepared to die," he said.
