iOS 6.1 bug lets anyone bypass iPhone lock screen

A security problem with iOS 6.1 could potentially allow anyone to bypass the lock screen on a device running the OS and access the data on the phone.

The issue allows anyone who knows the trick to unlock a phone and access call logs, contacts, favourite contacts, make calls and even access photos on the device by trying to add a photo to a contact.

The issue was uncovered by YouTube user videosdebarraquito and involves quickly making and cancelling an emergency call and holding down the power button.

The iOS 6.1 operating system has suffered a number of bugs including excessive logging issues when connected to an Exchange server. It also had issues with 3G that lead UK network operator Vodafone to advise its customers not to update their handsets until the problem had been rectified.

A subsequent update to iOS 6.1.1 led Vodafone to tell customers to go ahead and update. It's also not the first time that an Apple update has left handsets vulnerable ??iOS 4.1 had a very similar issue that let anyone bypass the lock screen.

Apple had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Southern California housing market sees best January in six years

The Southland's housing market got off to its best start in six years during January with the median price jumping 24 percent and sales increasing 11 percent from a year earlier, a research firm said Wednesday.

Sales of new and previously owned houses and condominiums rose to 16,058 properties in January from 14,523 a year ago, said La Jolla-based DataQuick. Last month's total was the highest for a January since 18,128 sales in January 2007.

January's median price hit $321,000, up from $260,000 a year earlier, DataQuick said. The median was down slightly from $323,000 in December, which was the highest price for any month since $330,000 in August 2008.

January's market got a boost from near record level sales to investors and cash buyers and move-up activity that remained relatively robust, the company said.

"This fledgling housing recovery has momentum. Already, price hikes have caused some to question whether it's sustainable, whether it's a bubble," DataQuick president John Walsh said in a statement. "Let's not forget, though, that we're still climbing out of a deep hole from the housing downturn."

He noted that regional home sales remain subpar and prices in many areas are at least 30 to 40 percent below their peaks.

"That's not to say we don't see risks. Sharp price gains can attract speculation, which could lead to unsustainable, short-term gains," Walsh said. "A lot of today's housing demand is fueled not by spectacular job growth and soaring consumer confidence, but by superlow mortgage rates and unusually high levels of investor and cash purchases. Take away any one of those elements and it will matter."

Kimberly Ritter-Martinez, an economist at the Kyser Center for Economic Research in Los Angeles, said that that it might be too soon to use the "B" word in this cycle.

"I think we can pretty safely say we're in a sustainable recovery. Spectacularly low interest rates are providing the biggest boost, and you have a lot of people who were sitting on the fence jumping back into the market," she said. "I think we are going to see price inflation."

Both sales and prices increased across the region last month. DataQuick said that:

? In Los Angeles County sales increased 6.2 percent to 5,308 properties from 4,997 in January 2011. The median price increased 17.6 percent to $340,000 from from $289,000.

? In San Bernardino County sales rose 4.2 percent to 2,137 properties from 2,051 a year ago. The median price increased 18.3 percent to $177,500 from $150,000.

? Riverside County's median made the biggest jump, increasing 25.2 percent to $226,000 from $180,500. Sales increased 6.5 percent to 2,858 from 2,684.

? In Ventura County sales rose 8.2 percent 607 from 561. The median price gained 13.2 percent to $365,000 from $322,500.

Absentee buyers - mostly investors but also some second-home purchasers - bought a record 30.7 percent of Southern California homes sold in January.

Buyers paying cash for homes accounted for 34.9 percent of last month's sales down slightly from the record 35.7 percent in December 2012, the company said.

Sony patent application reveals multi-sensor control surface called EyePad, of all things

Sony patent app shows an imaginative multisensor control surface, less imaginative 'EyePad' name

Patents, we love 'em. When else do we get to peek directly into the idea-pantry of big companies like Sony. On the shelf today is this application for an "Input device, system and method," which as mundane as that sounds, actually appears quite the contrary. The flat, tablet-like illustration is described as having six-axis motion sensors, joystick controls, and illuminated edges that "provide a similar functionality to that of the illuminated ball of the Playstation move." So, this would work not only as a physical surface (it has touch sensors too), but also as a motion tracking device in conjunction with the EyeToy. That's not all, though, as there are plenty of references to a pair of stereoscopic cameras "of a type typically found in mobile phones and other compact devices" at each end of the touch surface -- allowing it to create depth maps. The result described in the application is an area above the "EyePad" where objects can be recognised, and perhaps incorporated into a game. We're not making that leap, either, as it's Sony itself which refers to existing controllers of "systems or entertainment devices such as the PlayStation 3." Of course it would be a leap to connect it to, say, a forthcoming announcement. While this all sounds really exciting, we can't help feeling like we've heard that product name somewhere before..?

Report shows Nokia clearly dominates Windows Phone market share

I just read the latest AdDuplex Windows Phone report that contains findings collected from 294 Windows Phone apps and have to say that I am not surprised at all that results show the Nokia clearly dominates the Windows Phone market. Check out the report with some detailed pie charts showing the different pieces of market share.

Results from this data show that Windows Phone 7 still dominates Windows Phone 8, 75 percent to 26 percent. Nokia may have something like 78 percent, HTC nearly 14 percent, Samsung 6 percent and the rest totaling about 2 percent. I think HTC's share is likely higher when comparing Windows Phone 8 only, but Nokia did well with Windows Phone 7 with their fresh new products while others just put Windows Phone into Android bodies. Samsung hasn't really joined the Windows Phone 8 party in the US and their 6 percent share is no surprise.

You may recall that I had a tough time deciding between the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X, but in the end I purchased a red Nokia Lumia 920. The OIS camera, wireless charging, and huge assortment of Nokia apps and services made it pretty clear the Lumia 920 was the best choice and I have been quite happy with my selection.

Oil prices edge higher while experts debate demand outlook

Crude prices edged slightly higher again today while industry experts offer differing views on 2013?s oil demand.?

The International Energy Agency has shaved 90,000 barrels a day off its forecasts for this year?s oil demand growth. It now believes that oil demand will grow by 840,000 barrels a day. And it cut its estimate for world demand by 85,000 barrels to 90.7mln barrels a day.?

Elsewhere the US Energy Department has increased its 2013 oil price forecast to $92.82 due to ?increased global demand and lower US production?.?

Yesterday OPEC upgraded its demand forecast for this year. The oil cartel estimates an additional 80,000 barrels of oil will be consumed per day than it previously thought, with the new estimate standing at 840,000 barrels of oil per day.

Having broke through the $119 a barrel mark earlier today Brent Crude futures this afternoon stood at $118.75, up just 7 cents. Meanwhile America?s West Texas Intermediary futures were up 25 cents at $97.75.?

Last night?s American Petroleum Institute revealed a 2.3 mln barrel reduction in crude stockpiles.

Later today, however, the US Department of Energy?s corresponding report is expected to show a 2.2 mln build in crude inventories, though distillate and gasoline inventories are expected to have declined.
