The average cost per diner in food-service outlets in the US was $6.23 in late 2011. Americans spend less per visit to restaurants than most other major industrialized countries. Japan is the most expensive and Italy is the cheapest. It is suggested that Americans and Italians tend to have breakfast at restaurants/coffee shops which brings down the average cost, rather indicative of Americans love of junk food. Food is also cheaper in the US because of the large agricultural output.
