Broncos QB Tim Tebow sets record on Twitter, too

In the aftermath of the Broncos win against the Steelers on Sunday, there was a great deal of picking at his numbers?in particular how some of the devoutly religious QB's stats tied to significant numbers in the Bible?but Tebow also hit a special number in the more contemporary medium of social media.

Tebow's 80-yard touchdown pass to Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas set off something of a Twitter bomb that produced 9,420 tweets per second, the site announced on Monday. That figure topped the previous bests in sports, which were set during the Women's World Cup on July 17, 2011 with rates of 7,196 and 7,166 tweets per second.

According to Mashable, the only other two sports events to make the top 15 tweets per second list were the UEFA Champions League on May 28, 2011. Barcelona defeated Manchester United 3-1.

The other event to crack the top 15 was the NBA Finals on June 13, 2011. It was right about at this time that LeBron James was under heavy fire from the Twitterverse for his passive play against the Mavs.

Tebow's OT heroics were not the most talked-about event in Twitter history. That honor belongs to the staggering 25,088 tweets per second related to the anime movie "Castle in the Sky," which was televised in Japan on Dec. 13, 2011.
