Hughes said that event agencies were understandably confused by the GPS disclosure, especially after many agencies attended a briefing in May at which minister Francis Maude said that the Creative Services Framework had been created to achieve more efficiency, cost-savings and opportunities for SMEs such as event agencies.
However, the GPS is now developing two other frameworks under which event procurement will sit - one for travel and venue-finding and another for the UKTI and international event services.
Hughes, who as the former director of live events at the now defunct government agency COI has a clear understanding of public sector events and their procurement, said: "It looks like the communications category team at GPS could do with some expert advice and assistance.
"They need to consult with both stakeholders and the marketplace to avoid creating false expectations.
"The legacy COI Live Events framework was due to run until November 2013 anyway, so to now change their minds and not communicate clearly to interested parties is certainly perplexing some of our members. We'd happily help GPS get some clarity on this, as it would only be of benefit to our members and the broader events sector to avoid confusion."
